Atrocious-Review By Jonny T

Hello All,
So here we have yet another Found footage movie, yawn i hear you say? But i must admit this one is pretty good, For starters it's a Spanish film but could have easily have been American/English or any other country for that matter.
The plot synopsis is:-
"The Quintanilla family was found dead. Recorded evidence was discovered by the police. Production company acquires the confidential material and edits it into a Horror Movie."
So there's your synopsis, so we already know that they are all dead, great, the film starts entirely in reverse at 100 miles an hour until we see a recording of Christian and July saying to the camera how they are Urban Legend investigators, ok,Next wee see them arrive at the house where Storys abound about a young girl that lives in the woods that if you see her at night she will take you by the hand and lead you to safety or maybe not.

We get the usual found footage slow burn build up with the two main characters Christian and July who are brother and sister wondering around the estate but with two video camera's so you get both of their perspectives, we then see them going through huge padlocked iron gates in the gardens labyrinth of overgrown hedgerows, which they are warned by their father NOT to go into at night, so after a few nights of nothing happening  Ala Paranormal activity they start hearing noises within the woods, The dog barks constantly at the gate then disappears, The following day they go into the woods to try and find the dog and come upon a bloody trail that eventually leads to a disused old well where the legend of the girl says she lives (The Ring??).

They decide to hide the fact that the dog is dead from their younger brother as he would obviously be too upset although he's bound to find out eventually, this leads to them waking up with their mother screaming in the night and running into the woods because she believes the younger son has ran in the woods to find his dog, Que the set up basically for the rest of the movie, One of the camera's battery dies, the other has night vision and involves Christian getting attack, camera falls on the floor, blah blah blah, you know what i mean, he eventually finds his sister who is also on the lookout for her mother and brother, she is tied to an altar in the middle of the labyrinth covered in blood, time to get the hell out and back to the house but is it any safer there?

I won't reveal the ending as it does have a few good jump scares and a twist you may or may not be expecting, the thing i did like is the final part of the film is compiled from police reports, stills etc and ends with a very haunting and super creepy image.
So on the whole we have seen this thing now a million and one times but kudos to the director Fernando Barreda Luna for trying to but some different things into this now i feel flagging genre film, although he does have good taste in films because on scene they find a box with some VHS tapes in it containing The Bird with the crystal plumage, Godzilla (1954) and a Bruce lee film, good man!
It's worth a look if this is your kind of thing and over the last few month's there seems to be a TON of these coming out such as Grave Encounters, Episode 50 and the upcoming Paranormal Activity 3, so if you have nothing to watch at just over 75 minutes it's a perfect little film to watch,
7.5/10

The Exterminator comes to Blu Ray!

Hello people,
Well I have to say I'm pretty excited and very much looking forward to this release from Arrow Video of the 80's gory classic The Exterminator, it brings back many a fond memory of me and my friends hiring it out from the video shop and waiting with anticipation to the part we had all heard about where a guy gets put in a mince meater!! It did not disappoint! so look out for the Blu Ray release and see what real Grind house films are all about, Details below,
Jonny T.

THE MAN THEY PUSHED TOO FAR.

Notorious at the time of its original 1980 theatrical release for its shockingly real decapitation sequence and other scenes of graphic violence, The Exterminator comes to Blu-ray for the first time in the UK boasting a host of extra features that include an introduction to the film by director by James Glickenhaus (McBain: The Protector) and an audio commentary by the film’s producer, Mark Buntzman (Love Kills; Exterminator 2). Retaining much of its power to shock to this day, this classic vigilante action-thriller stars Robert Ginty (Coming Home), Samantha Eggar (The Astronaut’s Wife; The Phantom; The Brood) and Christopher George (City Of The Living Dead).
John Eastland (Ginty) has been to Vietnam and he’s seen things... things you wouldn’t believe. Having survived a torture ordeal and witnessed the brutal deaths of his friends, he returns home to a tough neighbourhood in New York and his loving family. But when some local thugs take a dislike to his best friend Mike, leaving him paralysed, something snaps in Eastland. Did he fight the Vietcong for this?
Taking the law into his own hands, the former marine sets out to clean the streets of every low-life, good-for-nothing gangbanger, mobster and ghetto ghoul across the city in a savage orgy of vigilante vengeance.

The Exterminator (cert. 18) will be released on Blu-ray (£24.99) by Arrow Video on 7th November 2011.
Special Features
Introduction to the film by director James Glickenhaus; Fire And Slice: Making The Exterminator - an interview with James Glickenhaus; 42nd Street Then And Now – a tour of New York’s former sleaze circuit with director Frank Henenlotter; audio commentary by Mark Buntzman, producer of The Exterminator and writer-director of The Exterminator II, moderated by Calum Waddell; collectors’ booklet featuring brand new writing on the film by critic David Hayles; reversible sleeve with original and newly commissioned artwork; double sided fold out artwork poster; original 1.78:1 aspect ratio; original uncompressed LPCM mono audio.

Craven Classic Deadlty Blessing-DVD Release

Hello Peeps!
Jut to bring you some news and a press release for the release of the Wes Craven Classic Deadly Blessing, i know some people were a little dissapointed when first seeing this as many people had seen a lot of Craven stuff before this but i gotta say go back and re-watch as it is quite great, Starring the great man Micheal Berryman in his usual creepy roll, definetly one for your collection and yet another great release from Arrow Films.

WES CRAVEN DIRECTS SHARON STONE IN THIS 80s HORROR CLASSIC.

Starring a stunningly youthful and beautiful Sharon Stone (Casino; Basic Instinct; Total Recall) in her first ever speaking role, alongside Ernest Borgnine (Escape From New York; The Wild Bunch; Marty), Michael Berryman (The Devil's Rejects; The Hills Have Eyes) and Maren Jensen (Battlestar Galactica), Deadly Blessing sees director Wes Craven (A Nightmare On Elm Street; Scream) moving away from the uncompromising ferocity of his first two features (The Last House On The Left and The Hills Have Eyes) and instead focusing on a far more brooding and atmospheric kind of terror.

In an attempt to distance himself from the strict religious Hittite community in which he was raised – one that rejects all the trappings of modern life – Jim Schmidt (Douglas Barr) has married a headstrong city girl, Martha (Maren Jensen), and left the sect. When Jim is involved in a tragic and highly mysterious accident, the close-knit community shuns Martha leaving her to seek the comfort of two old college friends, Lana (Sharon Stone) and Vicky (Susan Buckner), who come to stay with her during her time of mourning. As the three friends begin to unlock the mystery surrounding Jim's death, it becomes apparent there is a diabolical killer in their midst who may be hiding deep within the local God-fearing community.

Fondly remembered by horror fans for its many key set-pieces (particularly one featuring a snake in a bathtub and a terrifying waking-dream sequence involving a very large spider and a wide-open mouth that serves as a notable precursor to Craven's masterful A Nightmare On Elm Street), Deadly Blessing is a tense and thrilling old-school horror film that is ripe for reassessment in an age when horror fans are more-often-than-not simply being bludgeoned into submission by barrages of grisly images served up as entertainment.

Deadly Blessing (cert. 15) will be released on DVD (£15.99) by Arrow Video on 14th November 2011.
Special Features
Introduction by star Michael Berryman; “Craven Images: The Horror Hits of Michael Berryman” – an interview with Deadly Blessing’s iconic star; “Deadly Desires” – an interview with screenwriter Glenn M. Benest; original trailer; Easter eggs; reversible sleeve with original and newly commissioned artwork by Rue Morgue art director Gary Pullin; double-sided fold-out artwork poster; collectors’ booklet featuring brand new writing on the film by author and critic Kim Newman; original 1.78:1 anamorphic aspect ratio presentation; original mono 1.0 audio.

The collection also comes with a brand new extra feature exclusive to this release, the never-seen-before featurette “Danger Mouse And Friends”.

First broadcast on 28th September 1981 and starring David Jason as the intrepid hero and Terry Scott as his faithful but bumbling assistant Penfold, Danger Mouse was an instant hit with children and adults alike and has since become a national institution. The show’s enormous popularity was confirmed when it ranked third in Channel 4’s poll of the 100 Greatest Kids’ TV Shows, just behind The Simpsons and The Muppet Show, respectively, and ahead of the likes of Bagpuss, Scooby-Doo, Wallace and Gromit and even Doctor Who!
Operating from a secret base concealed in a post box on a quiet corner in Mayfair, Danger Mouse and Penfold are committed to fighting evil and villainy wherever they raise their ugly heads. Their commanding officer and the Head of World Security is Colonel K, a gruff and absent-minded old chinchilla who remains in contact with his two best agents by a videophone linked to Danger Mouse’s flat and car. Amongst all the world’s villains, their number one arch-nemesis is a despicable toad known as Baron Silas Greenback. Assisted by his pet caterpillar, Nero, and a skinny Italian crow with a heart as black as his feathers, known as Stiletto, Greenback is known in criminal circles as the greatest evil genius in the universe because of the brilliant inventions and diabolical schemes he uses to make his dream of ruling the world a reality. Only Danger Mouse and Penfold stand between the Baron and world domination.

X MARKS THE SPOT-Short film review.

Hello All,
1st off Many thanks to Twisted Central for sending me over the great short Film X-Marks the spot.
This is coming to a small screen near you soon and i have to say i was very impressed and you'll be in for a treat!
It tells the story of Abigail who is obsessed as many people seem to be these days with her Mobile phone and more so with her Freiend track app, but the friend she is tracking does she really want to or is he tracking her?

At just over 9 minutes long, it has some great tension building scenes and is filmed from some great camera angles, The setting is just normal day to day 2 people hanging out talking, checking the phones, on the laptop, ordering pizza, you know, the kind of thing we all do, right? So this is a stark warning without giving anything away of course to be careful who your talking to as in the great Documentary Catfish, you may be tracking someone but you never know who's tracking you!!
Like i said it's a great little short film and shows loads of potential for future projects, be sure to click the links below and find out what else they are up to and show your support for these filmakers,
Jonny T.

Strange circumstances surrounding the crime pique the interest of a journalist and a blind crossword compiler whose sharp ears have overheard talk of blackmail. Territories-DVD Review

Hello Folks,
Well i got to see the excellent i must say new film Territories from Raphael Rocher the producer of french zombie flick La Horde.
The story starts off with 5 young people travel at night on their way back from a wedding, we get to see they have a broken headlight and then we see lights up ahead, they are signalled to stop and this is where we meet the 2 self proclaimed border guards, on pulling them over the 1st guard asks for Passports, walks off then returns and gives the passport back, alls ok it would seem until he asks how the headlight was broken and the driver goes on to explain how they hit a deer "Roe or Buck" the guard asks to which the driver is clearly unsure and just makes it up much to the annoyance of this clearly psychotic guard, he then asks for all their passports and asks them all to step out of the vehicle, what ensues is a crazy one sided argument by the 2 border patrols which results in a girl being handcuffed to a tree, her brother who is mute nearly dying because he can't get his asthma inhaler, one of the guards attempting to kill their dog and one of the group getting shot and it does not let up from there on inwards.

The next thing we see is them all stripped down and bags placed on their heads and dressed in Guantanamo style orange boiler suits being transported in cages to an undisclosed location.
The next morning a sheriff arrives at the guys house and questions them if the have seen or know anything about the missing 5 youngsters to which clearly they feed him a cock'n'bull story and he leaves.
We then see the 4 remaining survivors in the cages and the Young mute guy managers to pull himself free for the handcuffs with his sister clearly warning him "Do not do anything".
Nighttime arrives and they are taking from the cages and led to a large shed where the mute guy before entering smashes one of the guys in the head with a rock and attempts to make a run for it  but they have the good old Alsatian dog and obviously he doesn't make it far!

The next scene is harsh to say the least, all 4 stripped naked sat against a wall with strobe lights flashing in their faces whilst extremely loud drum and bass music is blasted at them, it even made me wince!!
So on the scene arrives a private detective on the trail of the youngsters, questions the 2 guards but gets nowhere and has his obvious suspicions, he asks to use the toilet and is shown it's whereabouts and whilst walking notice photographs of them both in the Iraq war and a photograph of the main guy smiling inside the gates of the now notorious Guantanamo bay.

So you get the basic idea of the film, it's very politically heavy with the attitudes and paranoia of any one strange entering the so called territories, an example is the main guy who was driving the car is Asian looking and the guards are convinced he is out as a terrorist, lots of social commentary, lots of paranoia, violence and visions of how the torture allegedly transpired, well worth a viewing, in particular there is a girl who has an abscess on her tooth and i don't know if the actress really did but the make up is very impressive and watch out for how they get rid of it, you will look away!!!

will they escape? will the reporter find them? i must say the ending for me at least was quite a surprise.
7.5/10

Grave Encounters 2011

REVIEW BY BIG MAN GAV.

Grave Encounters (2011)

Directed By-The vicious Brothers
Starring-Sean Rogerson,Juan Riedinger,Ashleigh Gryzco,Mackenzie Gray.

It's not very often that a film will put my wife on edge and scare her enough to watch it from behind a blanket. She was completely unphased by the recent Nightmare on Elm Street remake that we watched the other night but then again who was? Blair Witch Project and both Paranormal Activity movies have managed it in the past so I slipped this promo disc into the dvd player with abit of a grin on my face, knowing that Grave Encounters would scare her to death!

The plot is suitably simple. A group of so-called paranormal investigators, led by ghost sceptic Lance Preston are filming a reality tv show called 'Grave Encounters'. Five episodes into the series and they have yet to unearth anything of interest. The latest episode is to be set at the Collingwood Mental Hospital which was built in the late 1800's. It was famous for experimental treatments and has been an epicentre for unexplained phenomina since it was closed in the mid-sixties. As with previous installments of the show the crew are to spend a night on 'lock-down' inside the building recording any suspicious activity but before you can say 'Who you gonna call' the team are running for their lives from less than benevolent spirits and levitating furniture. So far and everything sounds alot like 'Most Haunted' right? Well thats exactly what Grave Encounters is.
The film is shot entirely from first-person perspective using the 'surviving' footage from the crews cameras. If you've seen Blair Witch, Cloverfield, and the Paranormal's and you will be in over familiar territory. It's nothing you haven't seen before and if you don't like shakey camera work then this film will do nothing to persuade you any different. That being said Encounters is very good at creating a menacing atmosphere and there are plenty of scares. Alot more happens in this movie!

I really enjoyed Grave Encounters and would take this movie over a bunch of the usual tripe that passes off as horror these days. The visual effects are minimal but of a good standard considering the low budget and the cast are pretty good at playing hopeless individuals. Its a pretty sombre affair to say the least and the only laugh I can think of was from a straight-faced and frankly brilliant grounds keeper. Its unlikely that I will want to see the film again for a long time but any movie that gets my wife wanting a comfort cuddle can only be a good thing!

Blood Runs Cold-DVD release.

Hello folks,
Just thought I'd bring you news on another great film due for release Blood Runs Cold, yet another Scandinavian film following in the footsteps of such films as Troll Hunter, Dead Snow and the Cold prey franchise, happy viewing!
Jonny T.

“FILLED WITH ATMOSPHERE, FROM THE SPOOKY, SNOW-COVERED SETTING TO THE CREEPY HOUSE IN THE WOODS [AND] THE MOVIE’S FANTASTIC ‘ICEMAN-ESQUE’ VILLAIN.” – BLOGOMATIC3000.

The debut feature from director Sonny Laguna, the low-budget Swedish horror flick Blood Runs Cold takes the classic slasher template set down by John Carpenter with “Halloween” and gives it a Scandinavian make-over that chills to the bone.
Laguna’s hugely impressive and truly independent film – amazingly shot for just $5,000 US on a Canon 7D digital SLR using the camera’s movie mode function – not only succeeds in delivering plenty of shocks and gore, it also features a brilliant debut feature performance by newcomer Hanna Oldenberg in the lead role of Winona, a musician whose leisurely working vacation becomes a terrifying fight for survival.
Following a busy year of relative success in the record business, Winona heads back to her tiny hometown in the remote outskirts of Stockholm to stay at a house her manager has rented where she can relax alone and hopefully find the inspiration to write some new songs. As a snowstorm brews and night begins to fall, she manages to find the house but is disappointed to discover it’s not the luxurious retreat she was expecting.
Shortly after settling in, Winona becomes unsettled by the creepy creaking sounds of the old house and decides to head to a bar in town for refreshments and some company. There, she bumps into a former boyfriend and a couple he knows and invites them back to the house for a few drinks. At the end of the night, with everyone either too drunk or too tired to drive home, they decide to crash until morning. But as the four friends prepare to sleep, an unknown presence stirs within the house, one that has been watching and waiting for the right moment to strike.
Blood Runs Cold (cert. 15) will be released on DVD (£12.99) by Chelsea Films on 3rd October 2011. Special Features include Behind The Scenes featurette.

Territories-On DVD

Hello people,
The great looking film Territories is getting a DVD release next monday September the 12th from Arrow Films, from the producer of La Horde this is looking pretty good, Details below, bring it on!
Jonny T.

“TIMELY, TERRIFYING AND TERRIFIC!” – ALAN JONES, FRIGHTFEST.

From Raphael Rocher (producer of the acclaimed French zombie shocker “The Horde”) and first-time feature director Olivier Abbou comes Territories, a chilling and twisted thriller that literally brings home the horrors of Guantanamo Bay-style detainment facilities for a small group of unfortunate US citizens.
What starts as an apparently routine border check for five friends – Jalil, Leslie, Michelle, Gab and Tom – driving home to the US from a wedding in Canada quickly descends into the realm of nightmares when a small amount of pot is found in their car. The fact that they are driving with a broken headlight after colliding with a deer further up the road doesn’t make things any better. But it is the two suspicious officers keen interest in Jalil’s background that results in the group being arrested, blindfolded and dragged off to a makeshift prison camp in the heart of the forest.

Incarcerated in small cages, the innocent victims are subjected to humiliation and psychological and physical torture as the two officers – in reality a pair of crazy ex-servicemen with seriously deranged patriotic concerns – do what they believe is their duty in keeping their country safe from intruders.
Superb performances from a cast that includes Roc LaFortune (Beastly; I’m Not There), Sean Devine (The 4400), Nicole Leroux (The Core) and Caroline Redekopp (Trick ‘r Treat), along with impressive gore effects by special make-up artist C.J. Goldman (Conan The Barbarian; Orphan; 300) and coldly effective cinematography by Karim Hussain (Hobo With A Shotgun) combine to make Territories a shocking, controversial and utterly compelling entry in the “survival horror” genre.

Territories (cert. 18) will be released on DVD (£tbc) by Arrow Films on 12th September 2011
