WIN THE DVD-KAIJI:THE ULTIMATE GAMBLER

<

Hello all!
I recieved a copy of"KAIJI:THE ULTIMATE GAMBLER"in the post as a screener and thought oh yeah another asian cinema relaese, the i read the press release and came across names from asian classics such as"Death note,The last name and Battle Royale"and seeing as these are some true asian classics i though to myself wow this may actually be good and its amazing!!
Over the last couple of years i have found that there has been a massive influx with many labels saying "hey its asian, lets get a cool cover and people will buy it!"and unfortuneatly that has been the case but when a gem like this appears it is sometimes worth wading through the crap to get to a film like"KAIJI"
Adapted from a huge manga series it focus's on our main sat"kaiji"who like i guess in any societ does suffer knock back after knock back and decides to turn his hand"very succesfully"to gambling, but his skill for this doesn't go unoticed and soon the not particularly nice debt collector offers him 2 choices to pay of his debt,i will not say wich one he takes but in true asian cinema style, its the action packed option!
Featuring some of the best up and coming actors from asia this will be seen as a true classic in the modern day cinema and WELL worth a look if you are a fan of asian cinema and if you are not i would suggest you throw away your subtitle phobias and watch this now!!
9/10

Garry Charles

Hey people,
i'd just thought i'd let you know about a book being released by the brilliant uk horror/fantasy writer"Garry Charles".Its title is"Slavis"and if the cover is anything to go by it ain't for the faint hearted!
This will be available as a free, yes FREE download on September 1st.
Also available at the moment is the excellent"Death tide"
Check out garry's brilliant work at http://www.garrycharles.co.uk and download"Deathtide"to see what you've been missing!
Below is the Prologue for the forthcoming"Slavis".
Enjoy!
jonny t.

Prologue
The final two approached the cathedral on horseback, closely followed by
dark, rolling thunder heads that could be heard roaring in the distance. They had
travelled many miles together, carrying a cargo that was of the highest importance
to the Ministry. Without them the ceremony could not be performed and this
would be deemed unacceptable, if not catastrophic.
In carrying out their duties they had become wanted men and they both
knew that by daybreak they would be hanging from the gibbet by order of His
Royal Highness. They accepted this responsibility without question. What cost
their lives when compared to that of humanity? It was an honour to serve and it
would be an honour to die.
As they neared the towering structure of stone and stained glass they
glanced at each other and shared a grim smile. They had grown close over the last
year and were now much more than spiritual brothers, linked by murder, abduction
and a deep, undying love.
This was not the life they had expected to live, but it was the one they had
embraced when they first made their vows to the Ministry. They had faith in God.

So have a look below at these stills courtesy of dread central and if this doesn't wet your appetite for a great looking show nothing will!!!
On a final note if you have yet to read "The Walking dead"I urge you to as soon as possible you will not regret it,i have every issue from #7 to the current issue but unfortunately not 1-6 so if anyone out there has a spare copy of any of these and, don't want them feel free to send them over,ha!

The dinner party-Review

Hello people,
Here is my review for the quite excellent,"The Dinner party"
Plot synopsis:-
Written & Directed by: Scott Murden

Jealous and unstable, Angela (Lara Cox) plans a dinner party for her student friends - what they don’t know is that the night’s deadly entertainment is an extra serving of suicide and murder!
Determined to end her life after the final course, Angela’s friends watch as their hostess becomes obsessed with death. Soon they realise that not all of them will be leaving the table as Angela does not plan to die alone – the question is: who is she going to take with her?
Accepting an invite to dinner has never been more deadly as drugs, murder and suicide will make you think twice before returning that RSVP!

Well last night i got to see"The Dinner Party".
I really didn't know what expect going into this one as its not the usual kind of film i would watch but on viewing this i would definately be watching this again!
Its a great little film from director "Scott murden".
The lead character(angela,Laura cox)Plays the roll brilliantly,it starts off where one of the friends claims he has been drugged the night before and its basically laughed off by all his other friends saying he just must have drunk to much, but oh no!
She has a plan to teach them all a lesson,i can't really say too much without spoiling it so all i will say is that if you are expecting some kind of "Agather Christie"murder mystery that ain't this!
One by one they all start to fall for her fiendish pland and VERY twisted ideas.
From the start to the very ending you really don't know what/if/when or what will happen so thats why this makes it a great little film.
You do with this film get a real good feeling for the characters and sympathise with them, well for the most part anyway!
Thats where a lot of films of this type fail because you really don't care what happens to certain characters but with this when things happen because you do care about the characters it drawers you into the film even more.
"The Dinner Party"is out 12TH July and well worth picking up.
8/10.
Thanks all,
Jonny t.

Diary of a bad lad-Reviewed

Hello good people,
Last night i watched"Diary of a bad lad"From Director Micheal Booth and written by Jonathan Willams,
Here is the plot synopsis:-
"Frustated film maker,Barry lick(Jonathan williams),sets out to make a sensational crime documentary on the cheap about the charmingly pyschopathic Tommy Morgan(Joe O'Byrne),a local Buisness man involved in property rackets, prostitution, pornography and drug trafficking.
But Tommy is more cunning and ruthless than any of the film makers can begin to imagine and mercilessly exploits them for his own ends.Unfortunately Barry is so fixated with his one big film making chance he doesn't realise just how far out of his depth he really is and how his obsession will perilously compromise his ethics and ultimately put all their lives in jepordy"

So there you have it,the plot!
I was expecting yet another british gangster flick in the same vane as "lock stock"or"snatch"and a million and one other shoot off films but thats not what you get here!
This is real raw film making at its british best,Barry is indeed super obsessed with having his big chance and you can almost see whats going to take place and along with the characters in the film who are his friends you just want to give him a slap and wake him up.
Great characters and strong performances from all throughout and i must say it definately is not for the weak hearted, basically if your easily offended then beware!
If this film had have been made back in the day of the old"video nasties"witch hunt times it definately would have been banned or severly cut,yep its raw,but great!
I did really like this one and was suprised by yet another gret british film as i was with the great"Resurrecting the street walker"again another bright future is in store i fell for the director"Micheal Booth"and indeed the writer/actor"Jonathan williams"
8/10.
Thanks all,
see you soon,
jonny t.

TRAILER BELOW,WARNING-STRONG ADULT CONTENT!!!!!!!!!!!
Diary of a bad lad is out now From Safecracker pictures. With great extras as well such as"Tommy extended intro"and"What roxy did next"teaser footage.

"VAMPIRE"Reviewed!

STARING-
Jason Carter(Blood ties,Revamped)
Garett Maggart(CSI:Miami,Days of our lives)
Kira Reed(Cheerleader Ninjas,The final victim)

Hello all,
Last night i watched"Vampire"a new release from Stax entertainment and it was pretty good!
Here is the synopsis-
"Following a string of bloody murders a creature of myth and legend,a real vampire,is injured and captured by a mysterious military unit, imprisoned in a high security medical centre and then subjected to horrific and brutal medical experiments in an attempt to discover the source of his power.
As the medical experiments become viler and more gruesome,The projects Docter becomes torn between sympathy for the patient's suffering and the concern for the evil that threatens to consume everyone involved"

So there you have it,
I have to say i am not a huge fan of the vampire genre but saying that i did enjoy this as i found it different and a refreshing change from most of the formulaic vampire flicks that has graced our screens over the last few years, espically the sparkly vamps in the"Twilight"series and i wont even go there on those films!!
So for a "15"certificate it is pretty gory i have to say,it starts off with some good scenes but really gets going when you have the relationship building between the Dr and the Vamp,It reminded me somewhat of Silence of the lambs and day of the dead in the way that you get the patient/Dr syndrome but all the time there is this underlying thoughts of "How honest is the Vampire being and how honest is the Dr being?"so you really don't know how it will turn out, without giving out spoilers it does have a good pay off!
So if you are a fan of the vampire genre this is one for your collection or if you are just a horror fan i would say go check it out and its only £9.99,its a refreshing change and worth your time.
7.5/10.

Available now Through 4digitalmedia/Stax Entertainment for £9.99!!

Life During Wartime-Reviewed

Hello all,
After a week of watching plenty of horror i thought i would give a try to"Life during wartime"The new film from director of "Happiness"Todd Solondz.
Although not everyones cup of tea(mainly critics)"Happiness"was a grim thought provoking film and this is very much in the same vane.
The basic story revolves around a very disfunctional family with the mum and dad seperated and the boys mother in love with another man,on the eve of there mother introducing the boys to there future stepfather their real father is released from prison and they have to decided basically wether to forgive or forget,oh by the way did i mention that there father was a peodaphile? There you go you see, like i said it does have many many challenge elements and tackles very delicate subjects that most filmakers would shy away from but hat's of to Todd solondz for doing this in such a way it makes for compelling viewing indeed.
I did think that"life during wartime"seemed a lot more stronger film than his previous film"Happiness"i did really really like"happiness"but this to me does seem a big leap forward in basic things like character studies, cinematography and humour, yes humour!
Having read the basic synopsis you probably think "humour?"but i kid you not,its depth of characters does make you live with them and to me its always a sign of great filmaker when the characters get to smile you do too and i found myself doing exactly that.
Out now on dvd on "Artificial eye"films and its well worth a buy in my opinion.
8/10

SYNOPSIS FROM IMDB
"Separated from her incarcerated husband Bill (Hinds), Trish (Janney) is about to be married again. Bill is a pedophile, so Trish couldn't be more excited to have Harvey (Lerner), a "normal" father figure for her two sons. But when Bill is released from prison and the boys finally meet their future stepdad, the family is forced to decide whether to forgive or to forget. Trish's sister, the virginal, angelic Joy (Henderson), is also haunted by ghosts of lovers past. On leave from her degenerate husband, Allen (Williams), and her job at a New Jersey correctional facility, Joy unwittingly leaves behind a trail of shame and exposed secrets wherever she goes. In one of the film's most stylized sequences, the image of Joy walking the dark streets of Miami in her nightgown maintains her innocence against a backdrop of self-affliction and desire."

Resurrecting The street walker-Reviewed

Hello people,
I watched last night"Resurrecting the street walker"A new horror film from The UK and i have to say it is pretty damn good!
I heard about this on The Midnight Corey podcast and was lucky to recieve a preview copy to review.
It's basic premise is about a young film maker"James" who is trying to make it in the film industry and gets a job a portland pictures as there office runner and it doesn't go quite as he expects by basically being the dogs body, tea making fetching food etc and regularly described as"shithead!"
Then he discovers a "lost horror film"called"The street walker"from back in the 80's that for some mysterious reason never got finished. He then goes to the head of Portland pictures with an idea of finally finishing the movie by filming a new ending, will they go for it?will he finish"The street walker"?
Also sounds pretty straight forward i know but oh boy it certainly aint!
The whole film is done in a "Documentary"style with his best friend following him around filming his efforts and attempts to get through the film, along the way you do see many clips from"The street walker"and it looks like a very grim film, basically a serial killer in london dupes young girls into thinking that they are going to his place for an audition(bright lights big city syndrome)but when there he drugs them and kills them in very nasty ways, all done in black and white and this does somewhat add to the atmosphere, the film was supposed to have been shot in the 80's when the uk was besieged by the paranoia of the"Video nastys"and this is the reason we are told that it never got finished,or is it?
Anyway i would urge you to go and check this film out,i have seen many a new british horror this year and i certainly is in the top 3,there is not a lot around on the internet about this film but i know i will definately become a great british horror classic,it reminds me very much of things like "peepeing tom"and the director "OZGUR UYANIK"is definately one to watch.
It has just been released in the uk so guy buy it!Running time of 80minutes is perfect as well.I have looked around and it is now available on amazon.
A very strong 9/10.

Serial killlers:The real life Hannibal lecters.

Hello all,
Well i have just watched"Serial killers:The real life Hanninal lectures"and to be honest i wasn't expecting much but was very pleasently suprised at what a great documentary this is!
It features the case studies of some of the worlds most notorious killers such as Ted Bundy,Albert Fish,Jefferey Dahmer,Andrei Chikatilo and John Wayne Gacy who between them claimed over 150 lives as well as comparisons and features on many more.
Having seen and read many many films/documentaries and books on all the mentioned killers over the years this documentary still managed to come up with fresh interviews and som brilliant footage from the likes of Jeffery Dahmas trial and some great footage from the story of Andrei Chikatilo.

ANDREI CHIKATILO.

Also along the way you get interviews withwith world renowned experts, family members and people involved in many of the cases.
Its starts with the case of"Alber fish"wich was in the 1940's and a very little known case all the way through to modern day stories of many of todays serial killer and it has to be said that some of the statistics are quite scary!
This is now available on dvd through 4digital media at the bargain price of only £5.99!So i would definately recommend you buy this, wether you have already read many of the cases or are newcomer to the strange phenominun that is "The serial killer"its definately worth a watch.
8/10.
take care all and don't forget to look over your shoulder!!
